Magento 1 to Magento 2, with Hyvä on the front
A Swiss computer retailer moved from Magento 1 to Magento 2 in November 2020, with Hyvä as the frontend. It was my first Hyvä migration, at a point when both were new.
Where it started
Brentford Computers sells computers and accessories in Switzerland. From 2019 I worked on their existing Magento 1 shop, together with the Swiss agency Diglin.
Magento 1 was running towards its end at that point, so the move to Magento 2 was settled. The open question was what frontend would sit on top of it.
The real work was the modules
A shop that has grown is rarely just a shop. It is a shop plus the modules added over the years, and those are exactly what a migration does not carry across by itself. Every Magento 1 module had to be re-established on Magento 2, and then it had to work with Hyvä.
In 2020 that was the awkward part. There was experience with Magento 2 and very little with Hyvä. A module that ran in the standard frontend was no guarantee at all in a Hyvä theme, and you found out by trying.
Why that was unusual then
Hyvä was new. There were few projects, few accounts of anyone's experience, and no list of modules somebody had already checked. What a compatibility lookup answers today, somebody had to work out.
That is why this migration is here: not because it was large, but because it was early. The module question that opens every Hyvä project today is exactly the one this project had to answer when there were no answers to copy.
What I do not claim
I hold no figures. What happened to load time, conversion or revenue after the migration I cannot evidence, so I do not assert it.
What can be evidenced: the shop went live with Hyvä in November 2020, together with Diglin, and it was my first Hyvä migration. What Hyvä gives over Luma in general terms is in Hyvä versus Luma, with the assumptions stated.
